Trip Details:
This trip is all about large mammals, especially gorillas and forest elephants. The gorilla experience in Gabon is the worlds best, far exceeding Rwanda or Uganda. The reason for this is that Gabon is truly wild. You will see gorillas in their natural habitat surrounded by thousands of miles of wilderness. On his exploratory trip, James was following a family of gorillas while dodging forest elephants. It doesn’t get wilder or more immersive than that! We are arranging two days of gorilla trekking for each person to maximise the time spent with these amazing creatures. The first sighting flies by in a blur, but the second allows you to calmly observe behaviours you may have missed.
We travel to Loango National Park where we stay in three camps in three distinct ecosystems; coastal estuaries and lagoons, savannah and gallery forests, and deep primary rainforest. The camps are comfortable permanent tented camps, with showers and toilets for each tent. First and foremost though, these camps are our gateway to the wild, allowing us to access the remotest parts of the park.
There will be lots of walking. The elephants and buffalo are more docile than their East African cousins, so we can head out on foot whenever we want, working the winds to get you into prime photo and viewing positions. We will also travel by speedboat and game driving vehicle, following the wildlife.
We round out the trip with a night in Pongara National Park where we stay in a beautiful lodge, where rain forest meets the Atlantic Ocean. Depending on the time of year you may be lucky enough to see elephants on the beach!
Over the course of the trip you should see at least five new primate species, red river hogs, orange forest buffaloes, and many other weird and wonderful creatures.
why we love it:
This is pretty much the only place that you can see West Africa’s amazing forest mammals. The country is still over 80% rain forest and often referred to as Africa’s Eden.
A major reason for embarking on this safari is that Gabon has not opened up to mass tourism yet (it is so good that it inevitably will) so this is a unique opportunity to stay ahead of the curve, and stay ahead of the crowds. The destination is still quite raw, which adds to the charm. This is old Africa!
The trip is active and out there - it will quench your thirst for adventure!
