Trip Details:

Described by some as the greatest African bush experience on the continent, this trip invites you to leave the world behind and explore Africa as it was intended – on foot! You will embark upon a 100 mile (160 kilometre) game tracking, walking safari, across the wilderness landscapes of Tsavo West and East National Parks in Kenya – the largest pristine wilderness region left in Africa.

Hike and game drive along two of the most beautiful rivers in Kenya, that are home to the biggest elephant herds in Africa. During this spectacular hike, you will gain an understanding and appreciation for wildlife while following game trails along the Tsavo and Galana rivers. You will trek past occasional First World War forts, as well as taking in the place where the infamous “Man-eaters of Tsavo” lions halted the British Empire in 1896.

This is the ultimate safari into the world of the African elephant. These palm-fringed rivers are also the home of the unique maneless male lions. Hike in the cool of the mornings, and enjoy afternoon game drives to maximise wildlife encounters, and make this safari experience one for the ages.

why we love it:

This was the trip that started it for us 44 years ago. We wanted to respect the core of what a safari is all about and create an experience different to any other in Kenya. The Great Walk of Africa takes people right into the heart of the African bush. After all, there is only so much you can take in from the window of a vehicle. On foot however, you don't just observe the country; you hear it, smell it and feel it. You become part of this captivating world, and must act accordingly.

Out in Tsavo, confronted by other mammals on their own terms, in their natural environment, you are frequently reminded that being a human isn't that special. You begin to sense that instead of being the dominant species, we are but a small part of a fragile ecosystem and habitat, which may ultimately disappear in our over-populated world. This authentic experience of nature is about as far away from our guests' everyday lives as possible.

The huge rewards of taking people out of their comfort zone cannot be underestimated. Put simply, our trips give our guests the opportunity to learn about themselves, to reflect on who they are, and perhaps where they would like to go forth in their lives. When I lie in my tent at night listening to the doum palms rustling in the breeze, and the sky above them is a blaze of stars... when the only thing breaking the peace is the whoop of a distant hyena, or perhaps the moan of a lonely nearby lion, I know this is when life all comes together.

TRIP ACCOLADES:

“The African bush cannot be experienced from a roof-hatch of a safari vehicle. One must feel it to learn from it. Tropical Ice’s Great Walk of Africa.”
