Our NEW Wild Botswana!
More than just a game-drive.
Botswana has always been known as a luxury-lodge destination, so never really attracted our attention. We love comfort as much as anyone, but we believe that to appreciate a safari you have to sweat and work for it a bit. Only then will it become an experience. Anyone who has traveled with us before knows what we mean.
Tropical Ice has been working in Botswana for eight years developing and fine tuning our itinerary. We have finally found it – the Tropical Ice Wild Botswana! safari. It is a north-south traverse of the Okavango Delta, Africa’s most exciting wilderness, where you can get up close and personal with charismatic animals. A safari with an expeditionary feel that combines adventure, luxury and exclusivity.
We will spend seven days traveling down the Okavango river in motorboats following the annual floodwaters deep into the heart of the Delta. This is not always possible, but great December rains have created the opportunity.
By day, we view wildlife from the boats, approaching elephants among many other animals. The area is also world renowned for its magnificent birdlife. When we discover land we can jump out and explore. By night, we set up a comfortable mobile tented camp on a remote island or beach.
To experience Africa, we believe you have to live it under canvas, away from crowds, with only the sounds of the African night to fill the space between the stars. The food is delicious and fresh, and if you try your hand at fishing you could contribute to the evening meal!
As on all Tropical Ice safaris, we finish in luxury. Three nights in a permanent camp situated in a private concession in the game-rich Khwai Moremi ecosystem. You’ve earned it!
We will have this spectacular concession to ourselves. From our game-drive vehicles we will look for African hunting dogs, lions, leopards and nearly every species of plains game. It is a photographer's paradise (as is the entire trip!).
The safari is an exploratory one – meaning it’s the first time we’ve done it in its current form – which only adds to the sense of adventure. Each bend in the river, each turn in the trail, brings the excitement of the unknown.
The trip will be led by James Allan, Iain’s son, who many of you might remember as a young kid pointing out birds from the Land Rover roof hatch! (There is a possibility Iain may join too). James, with a doctorate degree in conservation biology, has gone on to become one of Africa’s pre-eminent conservationists fighting to save the wildlife and wilderness that we love. All Tropical Ice safaris are learning experiences, and this one presents the opportunity to dig deep into Africa’s conservation challenges around the campfire with a cold beer and hippo sounds for company.
This safari is the future of Tropical Ice in Botswana. We can’t wait to explore it with you.
