Wild Japan!

WANT TO GET FAR AWAY FROM OTHER TOURISTS? READ ON...

It is quite some time since Tropical Ice sent out a newsletter about our spectacular Wild Japan safari. The main reason is because we have always only operated one departure each year, the trip books up very quickly, and we have not been able to secure accommodations for a further trip in the remote region where we hike.

Now we have! Check out the date below for our new January trip.

What is different about Tropical Ice's Wild Japan safari? The answer is a simple one: where we take you is about as far off the map as you can go. Japan's iconic landmarks and monuments are similar in one respect to those in most other countries: they are inundated with tourists. For example, the monuments and temples at Kyoto are incredible, but they are heaving with Western tour groups. We're not saying this is necessarily bad, but it's not where we at Tropical Ice like to go.

The Kunisaki peninsula, on the island of Kyoto, is one of Japan's most spectacular regions, but during the six years that we have been operating there, we have never seen another Western tourist. Kunisaki is a place of mountains, hills and incredible ridges, and they are all accessed by ancient monks' pilgrimage trails, some of which are 2,000 years old. These trails work through the forests, across ridges, and pass amazing Shinto and Buddhist temples and shrines. At night we stay in traditional, very comfortable ryokans (inns). Our safari starts and ends in the lovely city of Fukuoka on Kyushu island.

Our scheduled dates for 2025 are:

January 16 – 27 (a new departure)

November 1 – 12 (4 spaces remaining)

Please note that our Japan departures fill up very quickly, and our groups are maximum 10 people. Accommodation is limited, and precedence is given to doubles.

Please write to us for itinerary details and prices.
